Mill Lane Sidings
Palethorpes 6 Wheel Sausage Van
Prototype History
These six wheel vans were built by the LMS during the 1930s for carrying packed sausages for the Palethorpes Company of Dudley. The vans were insulated and kept cool by means of circulating chilled air from ice bunkers in the roof which were accessed by means of a ladder on the end.
The fans were operated by dynamo, battery and regulator equipment as found on passenger stock, and the vans were intended to be operated at mainline speeds, usually attached to passenger trains with the product being unloaded at station stops along the route.
Full details, photographs and drawings can be found in Historic Carriage Drawings Volume 3 Non-Passenger Coaching Stock by Peter Tatlow.
The Kit
This kit requires the N Gauge Society Stove R six wheel chassis to complete. The main parts of this kit are made from Rowmark - this is a slightly harder plastic than most kits which enables it to go through a laser cutting process without melting. Normal liquid polystyrene glue will not weld the parts, however, a stronger glue such as Plastic Weld (intended for ABS, Perspex, etc.) will. These parts are a very simple mostly slot and tab construction.
Other parts consist of a piece of etched brass ladder, pre-printed sides to simply cut out and attach to the van body, and a piece of thin card to roll to shape for the roof.
Conversions
An etched brass overlay conversion kit is available from Etched Pixels which will
convert this kit into the LMS 6 wheel fish van.
